Laboratory of handcrafted gloves, Italian passion, Neapolitan craftsmanship

Artigiano del Guanto is an artisan glove workshop active in the North of Naples, founded by Giovanni Ricciardiello, a 10-year glover master, a historical exponent of the tradition of the ancient Neapolitan glove makers.
In 2016, the laboratory is renewed and with it the brand: Artigiano Del Guanto is born.
Today Artigiano Del Guanto is no longer a ” simple ” workshop of handcrafted gloves, but a family-run company in which the figures of Francesco, Mimmo and Flora – Giovanni’s children – stand out. father, in addition to the brand, they have renewed the production chain with completely new styles and models, associated with new communication policies to meet the needs of the “ 2.0 public ”.
Over the years, the Artigiano Del Guanto collections have attracted the attention of very prestigious names in International High Fashion (Giorgio Armani, MaxMara, Coccinelle and Pinko) with whom, today, the handcrafted gloves laboratory of the Ricciardiello family, proudly collaborates, as an official manufacturer.

Artigiano Del Guanto...

wakes up at 6:30 am and at 7:20 am the laboratory door is already open. The first word that echoes in the empty cave is “Good morning”.
At 07:30 the first coffee of the morning is ready and by 08:00 we leave. The first bucket of water to soften the skins is already full and makes a fine show under the marble counter which will be almost 45 years old. The glove takes shape between a glance and a pull on the skin. The first phase of the process is to moisten the leathers by wrapping them in a cloth (or ‘rags’), previously immersed in the bucket of water for a few seconds (nà calta e nà izat’), then we move on to the drafting of the leather on the counter, working it rigorously by hand adopting the right criteria.

The production of the handcrafted glove

Then, with the help of scissors, a 33 * 30cm rectangle of skin is shaped, measured with the ruler only in inches.
From here the technical processing starts, with the shearing the leather begins to take the shape of the glove. Once you have obtained this shape, you go through the itinerary for embroidery: here there is all the technique of our brother Mimmo, and of uncle Aniello, who through small pits, blades, curved cuts and various dies give life to holes, leather stitching, weaves, straps, folds. That’s all ? No! Now we are at the delicate phase of sewing, entrusted to highly qualified personnel who have been doing this job for about 35 years. The machines for the production of the glove vary according to the type of seam desired (saddle maker, strok or piquet).

The final stages of processing

Let’s not forget the passion and thriftiness of those who sew exclusively by hand and create small pieces of art, as someone described in the past years. After sewing, we move on to the “steccare” phase, that is the accurate control of the seams, which precedes the lining. The lining takes place with the use of special wooden hands on which the lining is spread.

The small, traditional gestures of our handcrafted glove workshop …

A light veil of vegetable glue is spread on the fingertips and then the glove is inserted.
To ensure that the lining is perfectly glued, the glove is placed on a thermal hand which will increase its adhesion. The final stages of production begin: we proceed with the hemming that can be done by hand or by machine, and we are almost at the end of the line, in fact there are only two stops left! The handcrafted gloves are “set”, that is ironed on the thermal hands, joined with cotton and subjected to the final inspection, before moving on to the destination packaging.
